Day 2 - MATERA
Following breakfast, participants will convene at the stables for horse assignment. The journey will commence with a 15 km drive to the Bosco di Lucignano Forest within the Parco della Murgia Materana. Horses will be unloaded for a trek along ancient paths and sheep-tracks, retracing the routes of shepherds and brigands through the historic woodlands and lush Mediterranean scrub. This immersive experience will offer a glimpse into the region's rich history, including Neolithic settlements, jazzi, rocky outcrops, and fortified farms. A stop for refreshments will allow guests to savor the local Murgia delicacies. The area boasts diverse arboreal vegetation, predominantly oak and holm oak trees, alongside shrubs like junipers, honeysuckles, and mastic trees. The undergrowth and glades are adorned with rare flora such as ash, male peony, cerere a resta, Matera's ophrys, Trionfetti's cornflower, and various orchids. Wildlife encounters may include grazing podoliche cows, foxes, wild boars, wolves, porcupines, as well as an array of insects and birds of prey. Return to the accommodation in the late afternoon for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3 - MATERA
The day begins with a meeting at the stables for horse assignments, grooming, and saddling. Departing from the stables, the itinerary leads to Murgia Timone and Murgecchia, renowned for their naturalistic and archaeological significance. Trekking through Mediterranean scrubland, guests will enjoy panoramic views of the Gravine canyons and the striking Sassi of Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A traditional lunch awaits at an environmental education center housed within a pastoral age jazzo. The journey continues along ancient sheep tracks, exploring the rock churches in the vicinity.
